Students Writing Books

In the article Podcast Books, it is pretty cool to see what children can do.  I am sure that by letting the children create what they are learning and expressing it, the retain more of the information being learned.  I thought this approach to teaching and reinforcing material learned was very creative.  I know that the students will enjoy active learning much more than lecture or simply reading a book.  I like this approach and hope that I will be able to be creative in my classroom.

Closing the Divide

In the blog Closing the Divide, it discussed African-American gaining access to computers.  I really can relate with this blog.  At Screven Elementary School, the third throught fifth grades all have technology in their classrooms.  I believe that this is a wonderful thing.  The children are able to access these computers and hopefully have a better chance of succeeding in the world because they know how to use a computer.

Pressure To Blog??

In the article MySpace Not Cool Anymore… it is discussed that blogging is sometimes peer-pressure on Xanga and MySpace.  I personally don’t like them.  I got the college “Facebook” and left it at that.  There are so many of the blogging sites.  Sometimes I feel that MySpace and Xanga are very dangerous to children and young teens.  There have been many stories about negative things happening related to blogging.  I am not sure what will happen next with the blogging sites, but I do know that security is a must and the measures should be taken to be safe while blogging.

Alka-Seltzer Rocket

Alka-Seltzer Rocket

I thought this was pretty cool.  I think it would be great to use in a science class when talking about Chemistry.  I think the students would like a "fun" hands-on activity and would remember more of the material when they have something to relate it to.  One way I might alter the experiment would be to have teams and have a contest to see who's rocket went the furthest.  Not only would Chemistry be taught, Math skills would also be reinforced.

This document was very different than most documents that you would normally find on education.  I liked how this school took very untraditional subjects and teaching methods to grab the student’s attention.  The students did not have very good education, but these teachers tried to help the students learn about topics that would relate to their society and daily life.  These teachers picked topics that are sometimes hard to deal with.  I think that students should have the opportunity to learn and research just as these students have.  Finding information for one’s self will help the students better remember the topic covered and they will learn more through self investigation.
